Collab Writer

Modules Back to the app

Build a module

A module changes how Collab Writer looks or works, for you alone: its colours, for example, or which commands sit in which menu. You do not write it yourself. You describe what you want to an AI tool such as Claude or ChatGPT, the tool writes the module, and you try it here before you keep it.

  1. Connect your AI tool to Collab Writer (step 1), so it can save what it builds here. If your tool cannot connect, skip to step 3 and add the module file yourself.
  2. Ask for what you want in your tool's chat (step 2).
  3. Try it and keep it (step 3): each attempt appears here, shown on a sample paper, and you keep the one you like.

1Connect your AI tool

Connecting lets your AI tool read Collab Writer's instructions for building modules, check its work, and save each attempt here. It cannot read your documents. The connection uses MCP, a standard that many AI tools use to link to other apps.

  1. Copy this address:
  2. Choose your tool and follow its steps:
  3. When a Collab Writer page asks whether to connect, check that it names your tool, and click Allow. Your tool then appears under Connected below.

    2Describe what you want

In your AI tool's chat, say what you want in your own words, or copy one of these requests and paste it into the chat. Your tool may ask you questions; answer them as you would a person. Each time it saves an attempt, the attempt appears in step 3 within a few seconds.

      3Preview and keep

Each attempt your tool saves is a draft. Drafts appear in the list, newest first. Click one to see it on a sample paper; your own papers are never used. When a draft looks right, click Keep it for myself: it then applies in the app the next time you open or reload it. Discard removes a draft you do not want. Under Checks, Collab Writer says whether the draft follows the rules; a draft with errors cannot be kept until your tool fixes them.

      Add a module file yourself

Use this when your AI tool cannot connect. A module file is a short text file, usually named module.json, that describes the change; your tool writes it for you.

      1. Copy this request, paste it into your tool's chat, and replace the words in brackets with what you want:
      2. Your tool answers with the module file, either as text in the chat or as a file to download.
      3. Drop the file into the box, or choose it from your computer. If you got text instead, copy all of it and paste it under the box.
      4. Collab Writer checks it and adds it to your drafts above, where you preview it and keep it as usual.
Drop the module file here or click to choose it from your computer (a .json file)
